The Fysar, dissimilar to humanity's ancestry of persistence hunting, survived evolution by developing guerrilla tactics to evade predators and scavenge for meat, much like Earth's hyenas. Lightweight, agile, and energetic, not only are they difficult to catch, but they also are not a species anyone would soon forget. Olive- to navy-scaled with a mouth full of fangs and large, buglike eyes ringing their wide heads, the fysar ought to look horrifying by description, but they merely look humorous instead. Standing slightly shorter than an average human, their vast array of fingers makes them excel at anything involving their hands, and their incredible short-range eyesight assists in these endeavors. Their eyes are perhaps their most defining feature: with one primary pair of telescoping eyes and six segmented clusters, they not only have near-360 vision, but they can also examine things on the microscopic level. Unfortunately, their eyes utterly fail them when it comes to brightly-colored computer screens or holograms, and they even find bright lighting physically painful.

Fysar quickly spread throughout the galaxy about a millennia and a half ago after discovering FTL travel, finding work wherever they went - especially in space station construction and maintenance, and crewing ships for their less-technically-inclined friends, the plodii.

Description

Physical appearance

This species looks almost like a caricature, with squat heads and an exaggerated smile filled with two layers of long, sharp teeth. Around the top of their heads are, variously, bristle-like hairs and a ring of four segmented eyes. Below, they have long, sinewy arms and legs, with wide feet and no less than nine digits on each hand. Their fingers have the appearance of being nearly entirely skin and bone, which under normal circumstances might look rather creepy, but instead merely looks humorous due to how much wider the palm is than the rest of their arm. Their bodies are covered in scales, usually in drab, washed-out shades of dark brown-greens and dark blues, occasionally with silver streaks, and typically with a mottling pattern.

They have two primary eyes that they use in most circumstances; these look somewhat more like that of a human or terrestrial animal, but are capable of distorting themselves, or "telescoping", in order to make out things on a very small scale. This can be unnerving for a human that witnesses it for the first time, as it appears something inside the eyeball is trying to push its way out. Their other eyes are segmented, spaced mostly on the sides and back, and are mostly used subconsciously to detect changes in the surrounding environment.

One of their other most noteworthy features is their terrible metabolism. Because of their energetic lifestyles and little ability to store fatty deposits on their bodies, Fysar typically like to eat snacks constantly throughout the day, or else have periods of decreased activity. They are very light sleepers and wake up frequently throughout the night, often in order to eat a snack of some sort. They are capable of eating things a human would never even think of touching - for instance, they are easily capable of eating small birds or fish raw, including bones, feathers, and skin - though they much prefer cooked food, as most sentient species do.

Abilities

Fysar characters have the following characteristics:

  • +1 hacking

  • Nimble: Their spry, strong limbs permit them advantage on all on-foot agility-only rolls.
  • 360 vision: A ring of eyes around a fysar's head permits them a near-360 degree field of vision, making it difficult to sneak around a fysar. While they can wear normal helmets, these helmets will disrupt this ability.
  • Sharp teeth: The fysar have long, sharp teeth, owed largely to their scavenging ancestry. They can be used to attack with the same rolls as a normal kick/punch, and can deal serious damage.
  • Microscopic vision: Strong telescoping lenses in their frontal eyes permit them to quite easily perceive details a human couldn't possibly - but not on an atomic or molecular scale, of course.
  • -1 computers
  • -1 exotics
  • -1 auxiliary
  • Very lightweight: All blows with the blunt force of a melee attack from a heavier character knock them off their feet and stun them for three layers.
  • Sensitive eyesight: Having grown up in a dimly-lit jungle, their eyes adapted to low light. Unexpected bright lights cause them to suffer pain, a standard endurance roll, and become stunned for a layer.
  • Easily distracted: A fysar's thought processes are wired distinctly differently from a human's, permitting fast overturn of new ideas and possibilities. This also makes them become easily distracted, and they have disdvantage on all multitasking rolls.
  • Always hungry: A high metabolism and poor methods of storing energy causes them to need to carry food with them and eat at least once every thirty minutes to avoid an extra -1 penalty to all rolls. (This is fairly easy to counter with roleplay: simply bring along a few snacks.)

Society

Culture

The most frequent impression that outsiders typically have of Fysar is that they are rowdy, energetic, impulsive, and mischievous. Part of this is due to their metabolism: they are always either extremely active or not at all; as long as they are well-fed, there is no middle ground. The Fysar's unique brain chemistry doesn't lend well to rest and relaxation; everything is done with passion and enthusiasm. This is a double-edged sword: while on one hand, it means that anything they successfully complete will be far better than that produced by someone else, it also means they are much more likely to get distracted and forget to complete it partway.

Fysar are very opportunistic, and hard workers (if easily distracted). While boisterous and perhaps overeager to try their hands at new things, they also adore creating works of art - which, to them, are intensely convoluted pieces of machinery. Whereas some spacefaring cultures might put spikes on their bodyarmor, the Fysar equivalent of this is armor that either folds out, is covered in rotating gears, rebuilds itself if damaged, or some other form of mechanical overindulgence. Mechanical overindulgence is a key pillar of Fysar culture, and works of Fysarian art adorn their ships, their buildings, and their homes.

Fysar originally had no real words in their language for things like "gluttony" and "overindulgence" - in their minds, there is no such thing as too much of a good thing. Fysar wisdom dictates that if something can become bad if there is too much of it, it must be bad to begin with. Food is consumed in great quantities, with entire worlds devoted to the production of food. The hviska, a predator from the Fysar homeworld, is usually introduced on these worlds, as well as some choice species of creatures for them to consume. Hviska are almost deified in Fysarian culture; to have one watching over you essentially gives you good luck, and supposedly ensures a full and bountiful harvest. These beasts are often depicted on Fysarian architecture - when they are recognizable through all the gears, of course.

As to the type of food Fysar eat, they typically eat meats, finding human fruits and vegetables far too "soft" for their palettes - these give them stomachaches. Certain types of tougher fruit, as well as the wood of specific trees, are things they find satisfying in one way or another. Humans have described the experience of eating this wood, among them kato'ska and ravisan, as "eating moist sawdust that explodes in your mouth". There are no purely vegetarian fysar; such a thing would make them quite ill and eventually lead to lethargy, depression and apathy. They do have a fondness for human fish, however, and especially birds; they will eat these whole if given the opportunity, bones and all.

Homeworld

The Fysar homeworld, Vis'kyarta, is a smaller body than Earth, orbiting a somewhat dimmer star. Their planet has a fair amount of water on its surface, and in combination with being particularly volcanically active, often produces spasms of weather called "steams" where dense steams arise from lava beds to flow through the thick jungles. Their homeworld has (or had) a very surprising amount of biodiversity, and is among the most unusual and dangerous of biospheres that humans have ever witnessed. Of particular note are their families of highly-toxic carnivorous insects. These insects defend themselves primarily through storing highly poisonous chemicals in special glands on their legs. When consumed by a predator, this will kill them unless they've evolved some form of defense against it. Many of them can kill a human in under a minute following consumption, making them a popular choice for cheap suicide pills. It's also partially from this that fysar developed their keen eyesight: it helps keep them from eating something they shouldn't, as they haven't adapted an immunity to the creatures.

On the larger end of the scale for fauna, Vis'kyarta is rife with predators, many of which actively hunt the Fysar if given the opportunity. The most prolific and dangerous predators, especially to humans, are the near-silent stealthy bipedal quadrupeds they call hviska. These creatures silently stalk their prey from the rear before charging the last few meters in great leaps. They are, however, easy to fend off - if you know they're there. Being cautious predators, simply displaying aberrant behavior is enough to keep them at bay. This is probably what helped the Fysar develop their near-360 degree vision. They are also probably a good portion of what helped the fysar evolve as scavengers, feasting on the remains that the hviska left behind. The Fysar for millennia revered the hviska as gods, and they still have a special relationship with the animals.

Technology

Government

Fysar society primarily revolves around what they call "oiling the machine"; this is to say, Fysar typically work together in a fairly incongruous manner. If one of them notices something needs to be done, they will typically take it upon themselves to do part of it while relying on someone else to pick up the rest. In large enough groups, and under appropriate guidance, this can lead to projects being completed very quickly. They have an uncanny ability to intuitively sense what needs to be done, and take care of it. They also have an uncanny intuition to notice others that are not properly "oiling the machine". When this happens, they will usually attempt to make said individual or individuals "oil the machine".

Despite all this, Fysar take to new leaders willingly, and as long as the leader doesn't tell them how the job should be accomplished, they are very much content to follow along behind and get things done - in their own way, of course. If the leader attempts to take too much control (or "grinds the gears", as it is called), the fysar will typically become fairly irritated in short order and usually depose or usurp said leader. This has the side effect of keeping Fysar society from becoming too tightly bound to a single location: eventually there is so much "oiling the machine" in a particular place that they no longer feel they are needed. These individuals either found a new city, or, as is more common these days, take to the stars in search of more fulfilling work.

As a result of all of this, Fysar's system of government does not have a human counterpart.

Languages

Fysarian sounds like a rapidly-spoken chattering, with no space between words, and, often, no pauses even at the end of a sentence. Their only pauses are when they've finished speaking, or when they need to take a breath. Tone is usually next to meaningless - where needed, they employ a "keyword" somewhere in the sentence that signifies intent and mood. It's also worth noting that Fysarian swears are fairly popular, even from those speaking other languages; they have a certain rapid-fire forcefulness to them that makes them roll off the tongue quite easily when an individual is angry.

There are many different dialects in the fysar language, depending on where they're from. Learning all of them can be a challenge, even for their own kind; it isn't uncommon for two of them to meet up on a station and have no means of communicating with each other through "Fysarian". As a result, spacefaring fysar often take it upon themselves to learn one of the older, more unchanging languages - often either bhezian or hiltorel. The most common dialect is known as "Fysarian Common", and proudly called so by those that speak it. Unfortunately other dialects are often also called "Fysarian Common" by those that speak them, and making sure you learn the "correct" Fysarian Common can be a chore in itself.

Interestingly, the written form of Fysarian vaguely resembles ancient Earth cuneiform. More interestingly, the number of Fysar that don't even know how to read writing in their own language is disturbingly high, and they often default to reading in other languages instead - when they learn to read at all.
