Mission 2: Sedirmar Convoy

Mission summary

Platoon 56 was sent on a mission to attack a Mimir convoy in the Sedirmar Nebula. The convoy contained a science ship that had captured a small alien craft flying around the Dark Space in the Chilendorn system near the end of the previous mission; the platoon was ordered to retrieve said craft. The convoy was stated to contain a carrier, the science vessel, and a gunship, but it also contained two shieldmaiden-class corvettes as well. Upon arrival, the platoon took it upon themselves to destroy the gunship and then turned their attention to the shieldmaidens as the Mimir HAMMER fighters attacked. They were able to commandeer the shieldmaidens and board the science vessel with some difficulty. When the carrier launched a wave of fighters, they enclosed the science vessel and themselves within a shield bubble, but foolishly broke into the science ship's upper hangar, which contained a large pod of HAMMERs. Meanwhile, the ship-based team fought their way to the ship's well-protected rear hangar (fighting a boarbear along the way). They were able to secure the objective and get to the extraction point just before Mimir reinforcements arrived.

Mission synopsis

The mission begins with the deployment of the 6 squads at the rear and south-eastern flanks of the convoy. Squads 1,2,3 and 6 take the gunship from the back by surprise - in less than two minutes, most of the battleship's turrets are disabled, while the returning fire manages to miss the majority of it's targets. More south, combat immediately begins between Squads 4 and 5 and the HAMMER fighters trying to stop them from approaching the southern shieldmaiden. However, the HAMMER regiment is quickly overwhelmed from both sides and all the fighters are annihilated with no REKT casualties, much to the surprise of most who expected heavier resistance from the HAMMERs.

With the hostile platoon defeated, the shieldmaidens are quick to fall as well - first the southern, then the northern one. With their capture, the shield that previously limited access to the science vessel is taken down and some platoonmembers immediately start boarding the vessel from it's open side hangar. Almost all of the attacking forces concentrate in the vicinity of the science vessel as the carrier previously in front of it begins making a circle around the ship. Tulius and Karthus fail to escape the carrier's trajectory in time and are killed by it's numerous missile launchers.

As a boarding party is hastily assembled on the side hangar of the vessel and takes control of it, the other members of the platoon prepare to board the larger top hangar which is shielded by an onboard shield projector. Upon disabling the shield, however, the group runs into an ambush as 9 HAMMERs are revealed to be inside the hangar and prepared for combat. Furthermore, 16 HAMMERs fly out of the carrier and head in the direction of the science vessel. A shield is quickly raised to prevent the incoming HAMMERs from arriving at the science vessel, while an eighth kiloton charge is thrown into and detonated inside the top hangar, obliterating it and destroying several hostiles. The group still must deal with the 7 heavy-duty enemy fighters that either managed to escape the hangar in time or get to the science vessel before the shield was raised. Unlike the initial HAMMER platoon which was quickly eliminated, this one is both far better equipped, possessing a large set of weapons and impressively strong armor, and far more skilled pilots. In the ensuing battle, Brecalus and Trig are killed, while Marcson, Dr. Cha0zz, Foreigner and Chavez suffer heavy damage to their ships. Also, upon realizing that they are losing the battle, the surviving HAMMERs perform a suicide run into the northern shieldmaiden, dealing massive damage and disabling all but one of it's shield projectors, leaving the challenging duty of protecting the science vessel to the southern shieldmaiden.

Meanwhile, the side-hangar boarding party has been steadily pushing Mimir resistance deep into the interior of the vessel. Eventually, they arrive at the laboratories near the back. There, heavy resistance is encountered in the form of highly trained and well armed Mimir guards. An intense shootout begins as the boarding party attempts to take control of the area. Most of the pilots previously fighting on the top of the ship arrive to reinforce the group, with just a few staying in the rapidly deteriorating situation outside. Amenra unintentionally unleashes a ferocious beast, the Boarbear, from a cell nearby and lures it to the laboratories whilst trying to escape it and Aegagrus pushes Hema through the entrance upon setting off his grenade and locking the entrance, heavily wounding him, Marcson and Aliss, further adding to the chaos.
Luckily, Ysavva and Dinosawer jointly take out the guards, and Dino and Aliss distract the boarbear long enough for Ysavva to make an escape carrying Hema and Marcson's head, and everyone heads for the final hangar.

In the meantime outside, Chavez commits treason and turns off the shield, hoping to trick Tartarus in doing an evac. He is stopped in this by Squidhead.

Inside, Rikken Kai'isha, Ysavva and Andrew discover another alien orb such as that found in Chilendorn, and they and Dino touch it.
In the meantime, the Doctor ambushes 3 MIMIR and kills them all, helped by Tonon, Aliss and Taniya.
Subsequently, Blake opens the hangar, Dino uses his newfound power to save people from a grenade and a thrilling firefight starts, ending in Dino's death after he defeats an exosuit-armoured MIMIR soldier - but not before Ysavva takes down the airshield and Dino manages to apply the beacon to the objective.

This allows Zorathex to pick up the objective and, helped by the reappearance of the boarbear who takes out most of the remaining MIMIR guards, everyone rushes to their ship and leaves.
At that moment, the MIMIR reinforcements warps in, and everyone rushes to the extraction point with the MIMIR fleet at their heels.
Once they arrive there, a battle of attrition starts and several REKT members die or get severely hit, until at last the warpships drop in and warp everyone to safety.

Briefing

SCAMPS here. See the new faces? Yeah, they're not all new recruits. It's a long story, but most of the original Platoon 56 was out of commission for a month after we had them retrieve an artifact from inside a nuclear engine in a war zone. Took a while to get their near-fatal radiation doses back down to acceptable levels, and will still kill them within five years, but meh. Look around, say hi, but skip the small talk. You can yammer away about squads as much as you want once I'm done, but if you do it any sooner I'll have my engineers invent some creative ways to expel you out an airlock in pieces.

So, here's the job. I can tell you're all giddy with anticipation.

7EaIx8y.png

Welcome to the Sedirmar dust cloud, your zone of operations for this mission. Those of you that went to Chilendorn will remember my mentioning Mimir. Those of you that went to Taghdara will remember fighting them. For the rest of you, I'll explain. Mimir is an IPC - an Interstellar Prison Corporation - just like Tartarus Inc. The ship you see up on the big, pretty screen? If you haven't figured out it's one of theirs by now, I'm not even going to offer you the dignity of having my doctors use you for spare parts, because your brains aren't worth shit.

When the Dark Space attacked at Chilendorn and wiped the mission zone, it sent out some kind of scout or attack craft to comb the nearby area. We have good reason to believe that Mimir actually managed to capture one of them and disable it, and it's now sitting in the cargo bay of this research ship. That's the little shielded area at the back, between the thrusters. One of our moles managed to sabotage its warp coils severely enough for them to drop out of warp and seek refuge in the dusty space of the Sedirmar dust cloud while they do some repairs.

I hear some of you breathing a collective sigh of relief. "Thanks, SCAMPS, you the man! An easy mission!" Yes, I'm 'the man', but no, it's not an easy mission.

Actually, I'll be shocked if you all make it out alive.

8ZpPF2r.png

That's right, it's a convoy. What you're looking at is a photograph we got off one of our operatives' cameras. From left to right, it's a carrier, the research ship, and a gunship. Veterans from Taghdara will recognize the gunship - and yes, I can see you assholes shitting yourselves. We need every advantage we can get, and this is tech so advanced that we don't have anything comparable. It's worth a bit of risk - as is anything else they might have on board. It's a research ship, after all, so I expect they have something.

Your task is to get in there, disable whatever guns are necessary, and keep any fighters at bay that you need to as you board the research ship. We know they have at least eight. The side hangar may be your best bet for boarding, as it doesn't have energy shielding. After that, knock out the cargo bay's force field, find the Dark Space craft, attach a beacon, and drop it into open space. We'll have a small warp convoy arriving approximately thirty minutes after you, and they'll pick it up and carry it to safety - and you, too, if you're within range. If not, well, sucks to be you.

Did I hear an "oh crap"? Hell yes, this is "oh crap". These guys have anti-aircraft guns out their asses. Although it's nothing on the scale of Chilendorn's worldship destroyers, they're still better equipped than you are and they probably expect somebody to show up. The star system is mostly uninhabited, but those who dwell there aren't at all friendly with Mimir. If that carrier is packing fighters, you’ll have to leave half your squads outside, and have only half of you board the research vessel. It shouldn't be as bad as Chilendorn or Taghdara… but then again, that's what I always say.

As always, I'll be in touch with you during the mission. My engineers have made a few modifications, and I can now chat between squads without inhibitions. To get in contact with me, just talk into your radio and ask for SCAMPS. to get in contact with anyone else, just talk - everyone will hear you. Sound fine? Good.

You have thirty minutes before we ship you out. Anybody lagging behind can be our next lab rats. Commence the shitty small-talk.

Introduction

It's been eerily silent for almost thirty minutes now, the sky black but for distant stars while you've traveled through empty space. Your CASKET is attached to the side of one of the dropships, and you silently watch as it warps you towards the Sedirmar Dust Cloud. It starts out as a tiny, bluish mote in the distance, dwarfed before the massive blue star nearby. It then slowly grows, and grows, until it fills your vision - and then it envelops you entirely, with bright blue swirls of dust and darkened asteroids passing by your window. As your pilot begins making gentle adjustments to avoid hitting the rocky, slumbering giants, you realize you've greatly lost velocity: you're dropping out of warp.

And then, as if on cue, SCAMPS speaks up.

All right, SCAMPS here. We've arrived. Six squads and a grand total of 30 convicts - well, if Man-goat-thing even counts. Your dropships are a few thousand kilometers out at this point, and dropping out of warp. I figured you might want me to tell you hello. I know you all missed me. …assholes. The less retarded individuals among you probably want an update on the situation, which is well deserved. So, here you go.

One of the computer screens in front of you flashes for a moment, and then displays an image backed with an environment very similar to the one you now see out your window.

h5dD2XW.png

I have good news, rather than bad, which is a bizarre change, I know. And the good news is - I don't have as much bad news as usual! …yes, I'm cruel, so fukc you. First, as we expected they might, they've shifted their location to an open area of the cloud. They're lined up single-file, with the carrier at the front and the destroyer at the back. Good old turkey shooting, right? Wrong. They're making the repairs twice as fast as we anticipated, and they'll have them done within fifteen minutes unless you send a squad in to bomb the engines. And it won't be easy, either. They really want that Dark Space artifact.

There are, as of right now, two Shieldmaiden-class corvettes protecting the science vessel, jointly covering it with a force field. You'll have to take them both out before you can even think about approaching the science vessel's hangar. Even then, they've lowered the fire doors in front of the side hangar. However you get them open is up to you, but you'll need to watch out for the ten TAVs Mimir has protecting the Shieldmaidens. Analysis suggests they have a full HAMMER squad out there - Mimir's version of a REKT platoon. That means 40 or so inmates specifically tasked with defending the convoy. They'll be better equipped than you. They'll be more skilled than you. In fact, the only thing we have going in our favor is that they're not all out there already.

This is it, then. Tell your dropship pilots where you want them to drop you off, and get yourselves in there. Remember you can keep in contact with me during the mission by asking for SCAMPS over the radio, and I'll help out if I can. Also try to remember that allies are friends. You're pretty much screwed without them. The veterans here can attest to that. Remember the objective!: Don't kill our operative, and get that artifact out in one piece! Bombs away, gentlemen. Best of luck to all of you, and if you get killed, it's your fault, not mine.

With that, SCAMPS goes silent, and the dropship pilot speaks up for the first time since you left the Tartarus. "All right, gang, this is your pilot speaking. What'll it be? Where do you want me to put your squad? I can drop you in nice and slow, at max CASKET speed, or throw you in there even faster if you don't mind having to slow down. Play nice, remember, because I'm not actually required to listen to any one of you." He allows this last sentence to hang in the air for a moment as a clear warning, and then adds, "Oh, and make it quick, because we only have about a minute until we arrive."

Mission dialog

Mission Debrief

And then, suddenly, the sky changes as the warpships arrive. Six enormous, needle-like ships with a length of over half a kilometer each, they project a warp net around the EZ, encapsulating everyone and picking them up. The warpships' massive guns quickly quells all remaining Mimir resistance as it carries Platoon 56 safely away from the battle. The dust cloud begins to stream past rapidly, as the warpships' massive guns quickly quell any remaining Mimir resistance, and together they leave the Sedirmar battle far behind. Other ships already in the field - a Tartarus hospital ship and a repair carrier - begin to send out crews to collect the survivors of Platoon 56.

SCAMPS comes on the comms. "Well done," he says in limited congratulations. "Tartarus decided to send in a small fleet to intercept the Mimir reinforcements and settle a score. I didn't tell you ahead of time for a reason. If I have, most of you are stupid enough that you probably wouldn't have made it to the extraction point in time, and the mission might have been lost. You did well, 56. We'll get you assholes to the hospital ships to patch you up on the way back to Tartarus, and we'll get your CASKETs repaired. You'll be back home soon enough, and you'll have plenty of time to rest up before we send you on another mission. SCAMPS out."

Looking around at the state of your allies, it hardly feels like a victory to you. Your platoonmates are bruised; battered - their ships damaged or destroyed. Right now, the promise of rest sounds almost more enticing than the promise of extra creds… but that doesn't mean you're not interested.

Squad evaluations

Squad 1 (Cha0zz)

  • BFett: Could do with a tad more initiative, also the guy doesn't seem to be aware that he can hack and fire his weapons most of the time. For the rest all I can say about him is that he's a pretty decent asset to the squad and that his hacking skills come in very handy.
  • Karthus: It's probably for the best he's gone …
  • Ysavva: A girl with balls. While her methods seem to be somewhat crude she seems to get the job done. I'll be glad to keep her in my squad.
  • Taepilus: Very good performance in the start of the mission and this continued until he decided to walk into a door without watching … That almost costed me my head too … I'm tend to say that that was an idiotic move, let us hope that he doesn't do this shit in the future.

Squad 2 (Hema)

  • Aegagrus the Horned: Performs well, but is somewhat mentally unstable, and unpredictable. He is a strong fighter and showed that during the end of the last mission. He did however betray the squad, and for that he will be kept under watch. He should not be dangerous if given room to act on his own.
  • Unit4965: Preforms well when actually following orders. Has a tendency to attack things on his own (at great risk to himself), and go silent for long periods.
  • Taniya Aljahnar: Though not always willing to follow orders, she has proven herself to be extremely useful in multiple situations. She has a tendency to act on her own when she believes she knows the situation better than her superiors. This often leads to things getting done more efficiently than would have been done otherwise. She can provide a great deal of useful advice and should be listened to whenever possible. I recommend that she be given a promotion. She has certainly earned it.

Squad 3 (Foreigner)

  • John Fletcher: Performance is wholly satisfactory; as Airman Fletcher is considered for a role of the second-in-command, awarding a honorary rank is recommended.
  • Zorathex: Lacking in initiative. Didn't perform the intended role of the engineer/medic to satisfaction, but performed satisfactory in the mêlée. No promotion needed (or will ever be needed).
  • Clara Lesaille: Proved to be highly valuable in intelligence-gathering, operation planning, and executing specialised tasks. She has to be credited with saving multiple allied soldiers from a nuclear bomb detonation, as well as saving one of the captured corvettes (Shieldmaiden class) from destruction. Her mediocre performance during the first part of the mission was caused by a friendly fire incident that rendered her ship non-operational and prevented her from being more active on the battlefield for the great part of the mission. Responsibility for that rests wholly on the squad commander. Thus, in the light of her outstanding performance once her ship was back in action, she is strongly recommended for being re-instated in the rank of Airman.
  • Blake Lowe: Performed satisfactory. High potential is hampered by emotional instability. Supervision might be needed to achieve mission success. Airman Blake is likely to improve his performance significantly with experience - provided he survives.

Addendum: Clara should really be declared dead, and moved into some research lab here on Tartarus. Using her as a cannon fodder is a waste and defies common sense.

Squad 4 (Dinosawer)

  • Squidhead: MVP. Excellent performance, as usual. Promotion completely earned.
  • Francis: Still not the most useful squadmember, but has improved leaps and bounds since last mission. Further demotion strongly discouraged.
  • Kai'isha: Not very useful in ship, extremely good at infantry support later in the mission. Deserves more promotion points than she got.
  • Tonon Murk: Useless. Got lucky enough to complete a side objective, but doesn't listen to other people, or even acknowledge that they exist. A liability to any team he's on. Demotion suggested.
